New Daredevil Showrunner Teases Big Role For The Punisher In Season 2

Earlier this summer, rumors suggested that Marvel and Netflix were considering a second wave of original series, with The Punisher headlining his own show. Those rumors gained steam when former Walking Dead star, Jon Bernthal was cast as The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2.

However, a new report on Nerdist suggests that The Punisher will actually be one of the main antagonists in Daredevil Season 2, as opposed to only a few appearances to establish the character. Nerdist is claiming that new Daredevil co-showrunner, Marco Ramirez is referring to season 2 as “Daredevil vs. The Punisher.”

Both characters have a long history of butting heads with each other in Marvel’s comic book universe, but this is the first time that The Punisher has interacted with a live action Marvel hero. The only time it previously happened for Daredevil was in the Trial of the Incredible Hulk TV movie.

The report suggests that the conflict between The Punisher and Daredevil this season would be more “philosophical” in nature as opposed to making The Punisher into a villain. Daredevil and The Punisher have similar goals and a distaste for criminals. What they differ on is whether to kill the criminals that they fight. The Punisher employs lethal force, while Daredevil refuses to kill.

While Jason Statham is no longer even rumored to be playing Bullseye in Daredevil Season 2, Bullseye is still expected to have a big role in the season as well. Additionally, audition videos for Elektra have confirmed that Matt Murdock’s deadly love interest will also be on the show next year.

Daredevil Season 2 will begin production this summer, with a return to Netflix in Spring 2016.
