Threats and Harassment Cause BioWare Writer to Quit

One of Dragon Age 3: Inquisition‘s writers has quit after years of being harassed.

Several outspoken fans have been harassing BioWare’s Jennifer Helper since her work with Dragon Age 2 where she was a senior writer. All it took was several hateful people being upset with the game’s direction and learning of her disinterest of combat in video games for her life to be changed forever. Since then she’s received constant threats on social media and even sometimes on her home phone. Helper even says her children have been threatened.

After years of trying to ignore the bombardment of attacks she has decided to leave BioWare, a big move since her current project, Dragon Age 3: Inquisition, is still in development. It’s not a move she was hoping to make since she’s very passionate about her job, but she feels there’s no other solution at this point.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2‘s design director received similar treatment after releasing a multiplayer game balance patch was released.

The anonymity of the internet is sometimes a dark and twisted place. A quick trip to even a popular site like YouTube can prove that. It’s time that people begin treating their online persona as if it were real life, because ultimately they’re talking and hurting real people.
