Yahoo Sports recently released a piece on Pro Wrestling Guerilla‘s annual pro wrestling tournament, The Battle Of Los Angeles. The tournament has been credited on establishing and launching careers in the independent scene that includes names such as Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, Ricochet, and Adam Cole, all who have been signed by WWE.
Dave Doyle of Yahoo Sports spoke with The Young Bucks, PWG Commentator Excalibur, Dave Meltzer, and Marty Scrull about the tournaments rise and its effect on the wrestling scene as a whole. You can read the full interview here:
Matt Jackson on BOLA’s allure:
“When you survive day three, you feel like you’ve gone through a religious experience. You feel like you’ve gained knowledge and are a better person than you were before. It’s a true test of will for everyone involved, including the fans. It’s wrestling and sensory overload, and you feel burnt out in the best way possible at the end of it. BOLA is its own wrestling culture at this point, and creates tomorrows stars.”
Dave Meltzer on the tournament’s growth:
“They didn’t set out to create this big important thing, but like anything else underground that gets popular, word of mouth spreads about the quality and next thing you know it’s the things everyone wants to see.”
Marty Scrull on PWG’s role in European exposure:
“I think working for PWG helped me get signed to Ring of Honor, which for sure helped me get signed to NJPW. PWG opened the doors for all other American promoters to start booking Europeans, they saw these awesome guys working in PWG and wanted to bring them to their own promotion. PWG really started that trend. They’re trailblazers.”
