SmackDown Live didn’t let RAW have all the glory last week as they headed into SummerSlam with a solid WWE Championship match. If WWE wanted the blue brand in the main event mix the men leading the way are firmly the Awesome one and the Yes! Movement.

The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan could not have had a more perfect build. With such a packed SummerSlam card, the only worry was that it would not get enough time to payoff eight years of build like it should. These two have been nearly perfect in their build for the event. This feud has plenty of legs and could go well past the summer, but this was the long awaited first match and should be special. While there are plenty of great matches slated for the event, SmackDown built this one to be the most likely showstopper and scream stealer.

Miz and Bryan may have been the most interesting match going in, but Samoa Joe challenging AJ Styles for the WWE Championship left you feeling like there were many different ways it could go. Is Joe just another Rusev for Styles to move through? Or is Joe ready to ascend and grab the top prize in the business? The build was OK with a often trotted out “family angle” thrown in to try and get The Samoan Submission Machine serious heal heat, but Styles has been able to withstand much more.

The SmackDown women and tag team divisions also were bringing some marquee match-ups to the table.

The Becky Lynch vs.Charlotte Flair vs. Carmella match left me feeling like it could be really good. The back and forth between Charlotte and The Irish Lasskicker was pretty special during the buildup. Lynch has long been due a championship shot.

The Tag Team Tournament provided a bunch of great action and was also an effective way to build up The New Day back to the top of the mountain. It is unclear what The Bludgeon Brothers role really could be without the belt involved. Them winning was not a surprise, but the division is stronger with The New Day heavily in the title mix.
