Ricardo Rodriguez Talks Managing Rob Van Dam In WWE

This past week WrestleZone Radio released an exclusive interview with former WWE Superstar Ricardo Rodriguez that was conducted by WrestleZone Daily’s Nick Hausman.

Today we are releasing our final transcribed quotes from that interview. These quotes relate to Ricardo’s time working with Rob Van Dam in the WWE.

On the differences between working with Rob Van Dam and Alberto Del Rio:

RR: It was night and day. Those that know Rob know that, man, he is chill. He is your California surfer dude. Like, “Suuup man? Sup bro?” Just chill. Kicked back. Here’s a little side note. I had worked with Rob probably five or six years prior. Myself, Rusev and former Tough Enough competitor Eric Watts were in his music video at one of the training schools in Los Angeles. It was Rikishi’s Knox Pro. He had filmed his Van Terminator music video at his school. Myself, Rusev and Eric Watts were all in the video. We basically get our ass kicked by Rob. That was kind of cool. That same song is the song he would use in TNA for awhile. That was actually kind of cool. It was kind of like coming full circle. Shoot forward six years later, roughly, and we’re working together. It was definitely night and day tho. It totally surprised me when they told me. I didn’t see the connection.

(Below is the music video Ricardo is referring to. Warning: The following video contains mature language)

On how the pairing between and himself and Rob Van Dam in the WWE came about:

RR: Here’s how it happened. I believe we were somewhere in California. I believe we were in California. It may have been Ontario or Anaheim or something. It was myself, Del Rio and I believe Sin Cara. I believe it was the original one still. I don’t remember. We were just chit chatting, sitting on the bleachers, just sitting there and then I want to say Dean Malenko comes up. It was probably, maybe, two or three hours before doors opened. We were just sitting there chit chatting, just shooting the sh*t and Dean goes, “Hey, Alberto we are doing this, this and this.” Then he said, “Hey Ricardo, you are doing this spot with Rob today.” My first thought was I had just been taken off TV for a short bit. It was after Del Rio had destroyed me on TV. At first I thought he was just messing with me. Dean likes to play around but all in good fun. I’m like, “Ok.” And he goes, “No, I’m serious, you are going to do this with Rob. You are going to do this, this and this.” As the conversation kind of started moving forward I was like, “Oh, I think he is serious.” They finally get me the outline of what they wanted and I saw my name was in it. I was like, “Oh, ok, well I guess we are doing this.” Then it just kind of happened. At first I didn’t ask why. I didn’t say, “Well, what is this? Why are we doing this?” I was just happy to be back on TV. So, we do the whole thing and then fast forward to a couple of weeks later. We have already been running with this. Myself and Alberto have always had a really close relationship with Dean Malenko. I love that guy to death. I love Malenko. He is awesome, amazing. He was always a big supporter of Alberto. I finally go up to him and say, “Hey, can I talk to you? Just to understand why this is happening? That way I can kind of have an idea of how to go about this. Obviously I can’t do the same thing with Rob that I was doing with Alberto. How can I go about this? Just so I have an idea of what direction.” Basically, what he had told me was that they needed a bridge between Rob and Alberto and the title. The bridge was me. That was the connection. That’s how they ended up connecting Alberto and Rob for the title was me. I was like, “Ok, now I understand. I have an idea of why this is happening.” Which kind of helped me out a little bit. By the time I asked they were already coming to the end of the run. So, it didn’t do too much for me or the storyline at the end. That eventually was what it was. They needed a bridge between Rob, Alberto and the title.
