Kamille Reflects On Year-Long NWA Title Reign, Adopting Fighter Mentality For Next Defense Against KiLynn King

Kamille is expecting an interesting dynamic as she prepares for her next title defense this weekend in Nashville.

NWA Women’s World Champion Kamille recently spoke with WrestleZone’s Colin Tessier ahead of the NWA Alwayz Ready pay-per-view. Kamille will defend her title against a fellow powerhouse athlete in KiLynn King, who she defended the title against at CCW Industrial Evolution in December. Kamille noted their history with each other and said she expects the fans will see another unique matchup in Nashville on Sunday.

“We’ve actually faced each other [for the NWA Women’s title] at CCW here in Nashville and that was a hard-hitting match. It kind of took me outside of my element in some aspects, because there’s some things that I’m more strong at than she is and she’s better at it than I am. So bringing those together,” she explained, “it kind of creates this interesting dynamic because we know we’re both big, powerful girls, but she’s just a little bit more technical than I am. I’m a little more power-suited than she is. So I think that’s really interesting, and I think it will be a great matchup for the fans to see because you might expect one thing and get another.”

Asked how this matchup with KiLynn will be different from her previous title defenses, Kamille said she feels like psychology and preparation will come into play more than any other match yet.

“So I think this one will be different just because, like I mentioned earlier, she’s going to be thinking sort of the same way that I do just because we were trained the same way. And so it’s interesting to get in there, and normally no one knows your game plan or what you’re thinking, but I know that she’s going to know. So it’s almost a reverse psychology type of thing. I’m going to have to go in there, maybe doing something that’s different than what she’s expecting,” Kamille said. “So it’s almost like a boxer or a fighter getting ready for a match and studying the tape and figuring out ‘ok she knows that I’m going to do this,” and so what can I do that’s unexpected for her? So it’s a very interesting dynamic getting in there with someone that is not only my size but thinks similarly to the way that I do.”

Kamille’s title reign has now surpassed 365 days, crossing the year-long threshold on June 6. Asked to comment on her title reign so far, she feels like she really proved herself and showed people she had what it took to be a credible champion.

“I think it’s been a great title run thus far. I mean, I’ve had some really good competitors come in there in the ring with me and I’ve been skilled enough to beat them and remain the champion. So that’s been awesome. And I think that a lot of people, when I first got the title,” she pointed out, “they didn’t really know what to expect because I was only a few matches in with NWA at that point. And so I think I’ve really proved myself.”

Asked if she could pick a favorite match of her reign so far, Kamille called back to her title defense against AEW’s Leyla Hirsch at NWA Empowerrr in August. Kamille said that the event itself was notable, but the “forbidden door” aspect from having an AEW challenger helped bring things together in a big way.

“The one that stands out the most is just my match versus Leyla Hirsch and Empowerrr, just because that event itself was so such a special event, an all women’s event and the crowd was just fantastic and had so much energy and it was kind of a crossover of promotions as well. I think everything just kind of came together there and it was my first title defense outside of when I won it. So that one stuck out for me the most probably.”

NWA Alwayz Ready takes place on Saturday, June 11. The event is available to pre-order on FITE now. Check out our full video interview with Kamille at the top of this post, where she also speaks about training with the Bully Ray, when the Forbidden Door works, possibly facing Tasha Steelz and more.
