Don’t expect to see Chris Jericho stop using “Judas” as his theme song in AEW anytime soon.
The song, which is by Jericho’s band, Fozzy, has become one of the most recognizable parts of AEW programming, as fans often sing it while Jericho comes to the ring. In 2021, the crowd even sang the song when Jericho walked to the ring without any music playing during his feud with MJF. When Jericho turned heel and formed the Jericho Appreciation Society, some fans assumed he’d stop using “Judas” as his theme, given the fans’ attachment to it.
But in a new interview with Spin, Jericho explained that while he thought about switching to a new theme, “Judas” has become an important part of the show. The former AEW World Champion made it clear that he and company Tony Khan agree that taking away the unique aspect of AEW programming would be detrimental.
“…When AEW started, I brought ‘Judas’ over there, and then it became part of the show,” said Jericho. “For whatever reason, people just felt a real inspiration from that song and wanted to sing it as I came to the ring. Now, I did just change my character, I went from being a good guy to being a bad guy. We thought about not using “Judas” anymore. But then I thought, why? Why change it? And my boss [AEW president Tony Khan] agreed because we have a very unique, very cool moment in our AEW presentation, in that people love singing this song.
“As a bad guy I could take it away, but then you’re losing this really special moment. People singing ‘Judas’ transcends being a good guy or a bad guy in AEW, it’s just something cool that’s part of the show. It’s like going to a KISS concert and they don’t play Rock and Roll All Nite’ because they’re trying to be creative. It’s like, f—, we don’t care, that’s the song we want to hear!”
In the same interview, Jericho reflected on why he chose to use “Judas” as his theme in the first place; he noted that it was a good song, and he needed a new one after he left WWE.
