Jonathan Gresham On TERMINUS: It’s Completely Different, You Won’t See Anything Like It

Jonathan Gresham wants to make the rules of wrestling matter again through his work with TERMINUS.

Gresham, the reigning Ring of Honor World Champion, and Baron Black will launch TERMINUS with its first event, “All Roads Lead Here” on January 16. In previous interviews, “The Octopus” has described how the promotion’s brand of “Modern Age Grappling” will stand out in the crowded world of wrestling.

Likewise, speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Ilustrated, Gresham noted that TERMINUS intends to bring wrestling back to its foundation as a combat sport. In doing so, he expressed his hope that the grapplers will have the ability to be creative with their storytelling.

“Wrestling has moved so far away from its origins of grappling and storytelling,” said Gresham. “We want to bring back that realism between combatants. Our rules are designed to help create drama. These aren’t limitations, it is a chance for us to be creative.”

“The Octopus” generally highlighted the importance of rules in wrestling during an appearance on Talk Is Jericho, and he drove that point home in this interview. When asked about TERMINUS’ unique approach to five-second count-outs, Gresham explained that the intent is to preserve the integrity of the in-ring battle.

“That keeps the action in the ring,” said Gresham. “A lot of thought went into it. Think of wrestlers doing dives out of the ring. When you really think about that in current wrestling, those dives, which are headfirst and very dangerous, they’re not used to beat anyone. Those are used for instant gratification, a pop. In the world of Terminus, in this setting, that dive can be used to knock someone down and you could win by count-out.”

Noting that he wants the wrestling in a TERMINUS ring to “make sense,” Gresham again emphasized the distinct approach the promotion is taking to in-ring action and highlighted its newness.

“Terminus is going to be completely different,” said Gresham. “It will be fresh, passionate, and it’s going to feel new. You won’t see wrestling presented like this anywhere else.”

TERMINUS “All Roads Lead Here” will air on FITE on January 16. WrestleZone will have full coverage of the show when it airs.
