Matt Cardona Wants To Save The ‘Old, Boring And Dated’ NWA: I’m Just Here To Help

Matt Cardona wants to save the National Wrestling Alliance.

The former GCW World Champion made his NWA debut at the Hard Times 2 pay-per-view, where he laid out the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion. Since then, he has appeared on NWA Powerrr and made it clear that he just wants to “help”, in his own way.

In an interview with WrestleZone, Cardona compared his intent to his mission in GCW — he wants to “save” the promotion. He noted that he thought the NWA “sucked” when he was a kid, and he still views the company as “old and dated.”

“I’m in NWA for a similar reason to why I’m in GCW,” said Cardona, “I’m not an invader, I’m not an outsider. I’m here to help. I’m here to save GCW, and I’m here to save the NWA. You know, when I was six years old, and I turned on the NWA, I thought it sucked. I thought it was boring and old and dated. And now, as a 36-year-old man, I think it still sucks. It’s old, boring and dated. They need me. They need the Internet champion. I wanna help Trevor Murdoch, I have no beef with Trevor Murdoch.”

Cardona is the Internet Champion for a reason; he is known for his remarkable following online, and he kindly offered to lend some of his own followers to Murdoch out of the kindness of his own heart and his surplus of online supporters.

“I mean that photo, that screenshot of me holding the title above him, was the most buzz he’s ever gotten on the Internet. He should be thanking me. There’s no beef, I’m just trying to help him out. I even put out a tweet today, please guys, can we please follow Trevor Murdoch? He’s not even verified. I wish, Twitter, if there’s someone from Twitter listening, can I donate, I’ll donate 50,000 of my followers to Trevor, and I’ll still be over two million, I think. So Trevor, if you’re listening, I’m here to help.”

With his objective to help the company get more buzz in mind, Cardona pointed out that he’s been pitching the idea of changing the promotion’s name to the “MCWA” so it would get more clicks.

“I’m trying to convince Billy Corgan to change the NWA to the MCWA, the Matt Cardona Wrestling Alliance,” said Cardona. “I think we’d get more buzz, more clicks, more views on FITE TV, sell more merch. I’m just here to help, that’s it.”

The reigning Internet Champion then previewed his time at the recent NWA TV tapings by calling it some of his “best work” and stating that he had fun.

“I’m not gonna spoil what was taped, I will say this though — some of my best work was done at these tapings,” said Cardona. “I had a hell of a great time. I enjoyed my time there, it was a lot of fun. Creatively, man I just felt like I was…it was meant to be. Perfect time, perfect place.”

Cardona also expressed his ultimate goal to win the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion this year and turn it into a spinner belt, the same way he modified the GCW World Championship after he won it at GCW Homecoming.

“I’m not necessarily going for that NWA title right now, I’m here to kind of just help Trevor out. Maybe eventually, I’ll go for it. But man, Matt Cardona as the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion has a nice ring to it, I’ll tell you that. And how, man, the GCW Universe hated my guts when I turned their title into a spinner belt. Imagine all those old-school tradition-loving NWA fans if I win that, put a purple strap on it, turned it into a spinner? Holy s—. They wouldn’t like that.”

Cardona’s NWA in-ring debut aired on January 14 at 6 p.m. EST on NWA’s YouTube channel. The reigning Internet Champion will also compete at both GCW’s “Most Notorious” and “Say You Will” shows on January 14 and January 15, respectively.
