Malakai Black On Why A ‘Strange’ Matchup With Orange Cassidy Would Be A Compelling One

Malakai Black continues to showcase his creativity in All Elite Wrestling, and he has his sights set on a number of noteworthy possibilities moving forward.

Given Black’s run with WWE, it’s easy to imagine him facing his former colleagues, like Adam Cole or Andrade El Idolo, who, just as Black did, signed with AEW after their respective WWE runs ended. But the man once known as Aleister Black is intrigued by some storytelling options that seem less obvious.

During an appearance on Casual Conversations with The Classic, Black described why he’s captivated by a potential matchup with Orange Cassidy. He admitted that this combination might seem odd, as his dark persona clashes with Cassidy’s laid-back charm. But he expressed his belief that “strange” storytelling material can often produce the most interesting content. Black explained that he likes the challenge this pairing would give him, as it would force him to think outside the box to build a compelling narrative that makes sense and benefits both men.

“As strange as this matchup may sound, but I think the strangest, sometimes, like the more interesting it becomes, how would we find a way to have myself compete against Orange Cassidy?” said Black. “That’s when it becomes interesting for me. And matchup doesn’t always necessarily mean we have to figure out to go 25 minutes. That’s not what I mean. It’s like how would the dynamic work? Where would the intrigue come from, and how would that project itself on TV through the lens of a camera onto people at home watching it on TV, or sitting in the crowd, you know?

“These kinds of dynamics make it interesting because then you have to think about how would I present that? And how can I do that in a way that makes sense, and how it is fun, and how it launches people and it doesn’t cut people back down, you know what I mean? Because that’s an important thing, you have to build up.”

Of course, the AEW roster has an abundance of stars, and Black noted that he now has the chance to work with any number of remarkable names, from CM Punk to MJF, at some point.

“There’s so many talented people, but also I feel like it’s a perfect platform for myself and Bryan Danielson to work, it’s a perfect platform for me and Bobby Fish to work, it’s the perfect platform for perhaps me and Punk at some point,” said Black.

At the moment, Black is focused on the current chapter of his AEW career; he has been teasing the formation of The House of Black and feuding with the Varisty Blonds.
