Reported Reasons Behind Latest Round Of WWE Releases

WWE released thirteen performers on Friday and now we have a bit more insight regarding the thought process that went into this decision.

Fightful Select is reporting one WWE official cited the company going into “talent stashing” mode in 2018, and how that was put on hold in effort to give more attention to launching NXT on USA. It was noted that while WWE had plans to create multiple Performance Centers internationally and have some talent travel between them, the NXT/USA move, coupled with the pandemic brought everything to an immediate stop.

In regards to why the releases took place (or who was responsible for them), it was noted that while Vince McMahon “could put a stop to them” these cuts were a collaborative effort. Fightful went on to note that WWE release will be a regular thing moving forward, but the volume of such in 2021 is seen as an exception to the process.

On a separate note, PWInsider.com is reporting there’s been a lot of internal discussion regarding a major revamp for the NXT brand, and it’s possible some of Friday’s cuts were factored into that decision. PWInsider noted those changes could include a new logo and lighting, with the show taking on a different format with a new focus on younger talents.
