Sami Zayn On Why Authenticity Is So Important In Wrestling

Sami Zayn knows that (most) wrestling fans know it’s a work, but it’s all about making you forget that it is, or at the very least, making you believe in the individual’s feelings.

Zayn is the most recent guest on Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions as WWE’s resident conspiracy theorist talks to her about what always makes the “one true sport” a viable attraction in the eyes of the consumer.

“What fans really gravitate towards is the idea of authenticity,” Sami said to Renee. “The very nature of wrestling revolves around believability cause we all know it’s a show, but we want ya to trick us.”

“You want to believe,” Renee added.

“You want to believe, big word there, ‘believe.’ And so I think that’s why authenticity is so important in wrestling because first the work has to be authentic enough to make us forget or make us believe,” Sami said before later addressing the importance of having an authentic character. If you don’t, you fall into the risk at losing an audience member, that includes Sami himself.

“If there’s something that I don’t find believable in the way somebody is carrying themselves, I’m out,” he said.
