Even though Triple H now says that winning sports franchises being gifted custom WWE Championships is a modern-day expected tradition in sports, he credits the start of the tradition to one WWE superfan.

Now it is, regardless of what the sporting event is, the winning team is gifted a custom-made WWE Championship with side plates to represent their team. Most recently, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were given a custom WWE Championship after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Speaking with TheWrap, Triple H revealed the whole tradition started because David Ortiz aka “Big Papi” is a major WWE fan giving WWE the idea to send him a replica Championship belt. Nowadays, WWE doesn’t send replicas. Rather, they send custom-made WWE Championship belts that Triple H says cost thousands of dollars.

“David Ortiz — Big Papi — was a huge fan. Still is. Here’s a guy with all this bling, he’s got the earnings and the giant chains and everything. It’s part of who he is,” Levesque said. “When they won the World Series, he was such a big fan and was so into them, we [sent him a] title. He wore it nonstop and just put it over like a million bucks. It just took on a life of its own and we went with it.”

Triple H later added, “[A WWE belt], it’s another thing you expect to get when you become ‘It,’ when you become the champion,” Levesque said. “Rocking one over your shoulder after winning the big game is the new ‘I’m going to Disneyland.’”

Triple H and WWE will be following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into Raymond James Stadium where WWE will host WrestleMania 37 across two nights being on Saturday, April 10th.
