At WWE NXT TakeOver 31, Kyle O’Reilly had the opportunity of a lifetime when he challenged Finn Bálor for the NXT Championship. Both men felt each other out with technical holds early on. O’Reilly took control and targeted the champion’s arm. Bálor rallied and floored O’Reilly with a dropkick. The champion turned the tables and targeted O’Reilly’s arm.

The champion blasted O’Reilly with some stiff chops. O’Reilly drilled Bálor with a knee to the midsection and dropped him with a flurry of strikes. The challenger hit Bálor with two underhook suplexes and a DDT. The champion dropped O’Reilly with a kick to the midsection. Bálor sent O’Reilly crashing into the turnbuckle with an Irish whip. The champion continued to target O’Reilly’s midsection. The challenger fired back with a knee and a Regal-plex for a two count.

A Sling Blade dropped O’Reilly, but the challenger took out Bálor’s knee with a dropkick. Bálor locked in an abdominal stretch, but O’Reilly hit a knee-breaker. The champion locked in a Sharpshooter, but O’Reilly, bleeding from the mouth, reached the ropes. O’Reilly locked in a guillotine choke and drilled the champion with a knee. A Brainbuster earned O’Reilly a two count. Bálor fought his way out of an armbar and dropped the challenger with a 1916 for a two count.

A Dragon Screw on the top rope and another on the middle rope gave O’Reilly some momentum, and a diving knee to the chest dropped the champion. O’Reilly locked in a heel hook, but again the champion fought his way out by reaching the ropes. Bálor hit two more foot stomps, and, while he was bleeding from the mouth, earned the win with a Coup de Grâce. After the match, both men shook hands. Then, Ridge Holland emerged in the stands with a battered Adam Cole. Medical officials checked on Cole.
