The Undertaker Initially Had Doubts Brock Lesnar Was The Right Guy To End ‘The Streak’

The Undertaker puts everything in perspective.

Undertaker spoke with CBS Sports’ Brian Campbell on the State Of Combat podcast and revealed that the decision to end his famed WrestleMania streak was debated until the last minute. As he explained it, the decision to end “The Streak” changed several times but Brock Lesnar losing the match was the decision “for about a week” before the match. He says he showed up to the arena thinking he was winning that day but was later told that afternoon that the finish was changed and Lesnar would be going over.

The Undertaker says he’s not too bothered by losing the match and ending the streak, noting that he just did his job and what Vince McMahon asked of him, but did wonder if Lesnar was the right guy for the major milestone.

“Obviously, in Vince’s mindset, if it’s not Brock, then who? My biggest concern was I just wanted to make sure that [McMahon] was sure and that’s what he wanted to do. I didn’t feel like Brock needed it. Brock was already a huge star, and it wasn’t going to help him one way or another. My only concern was there might have been someone down the line that could have benefitted from it more and that probably would’ve been Roman later on.

“That’s with hindsight being 20/20. But if I was going to get beat by someone, Brock was a guy who had the credentials, I think, to do it and people would be like, ‘Um, OK, s—, that’s Brock Lesnar.’ That was my biggest deal. I just wanted to make sure that’s really what [McMahon] had wanted to do.”

The match is now in the history books and The Undertaker has gone on record and talked about how he doesn’t remember the match at WrestleMania XXX due to a concussion he sustained during the match. Despite how everything went down, he says he just wishes he would have “had my wits about me so the match would have been a little better.” He added that there’s nothing you can do about being concussed but he just wishes he would have been able to make the match feel more special.
