In his own mind, Sami Zayn is still the Intercontinental Champion.
Last night’s episode of WWE Backstage saw a major announcement made (no, not CM Punk trying the ice cream bars) and Zayn was stripped of his title due to being “unable to compete.” Zayn vacated the title and it was announced that a tournament will start on SmackDown this week to crown a new champion.
Zayn has finally commented on the decision, posting the following statement:
I disagree with this decision and no matter what anyone says, I am still undefeated and therefore still the Intercontinental Champion. -SZ
Zayn has not competed in WWE since WrestleMania last month when he retained his title against Daniel Bryan. The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported on May 1st that Zayn opted not to attend Smackdown on that date, citing that WWE has allowed talent to opt-out of participating due to current pandemic without consequences.
