Speaking on SiriusXM’s Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray discussed that the most important tool a wrestler has is a pencil, and their ability to negotiate a deal before anything bad happens.
“The ring was the easy part,” he said. “It’s driving in the cars, it’s sleeping in the different beds in the hotels, it’s flying on the planes, and I don’t care if you’re flying first class, you’re still flying on a plane and dealing with the airport, and dragging your bags and getting on a plane blah, blah, blah, it takes a toll on you.” Bully Ray then went on to say that life in the ring was fleeting, so that it’s important to set up a smart deal yourself for the future before you become a victim of the pencil.
“The pencil is the most powerful tool in pro wrestling because one side of the pencil can make you a millionaire,” he said. “And in an instant, the other side of the pencil can you put you in the poor house.” Ray gave an example of how writing in someone as a champion could be lifechanging for someone, but that “the pencil” could just as easily erase someone’s name from the book.
