Seth Rollins Retains Title Over Bray Wyatt Due To ‘Match Stoppage Ruling’ At WWE Hell In A Cell

Update: WWE.com is calling the decision a “match-stoppage ruling that led to Rollins retaining the title” and also references the “instantly controversial” result of the bout.

At WWE Hell in a Cell, WWE Universal Champion Seth Rollins faced “the Fiend” Bray Wyatt in a Hell in a Cell match. The Fiend has tormented Rollins in the weeks leading up to this match. The referee called for the bell when Rollins hit Wyatt with a sledgehammer. Wyatt attacked Rollins after the match and put him in the Mandible Claw. Wyatt hit Rollins with Sister Abigail on the floor, another one onto exposed concrete and locked in the Mandible Claw.

Wyatt didn’t feel any of Rollins’ offense, including shots from a kendo stick, early on. Wyatt took control and slammed and Rollins into the steel wall of the cell. A splash into the wall drove Rollins into it yet again. The BeastSlayer hit Wyatt with the steel steps a few times. Rollins sent Wyatt into the cell with some dives to the outside. On one attempt, Wyatt caught Rollins and hit Sister Abigail into the cell. The BeastSlayer hit a Frog Splash through a table but Wyatt got right back up. Rollins hit the Curb Stomp but Wyatt got right back up. Wyatt planted Rollins with Sister Abigail for a near fall. Wyatt hit Rollins with a neck snap.

Wyatt got a big mallet and used it to drive Rollins into the cell. Rollins hit Wyatt with three superkicks and dropped him with a Curb Stomp on the mallet. Two springboard knees rocked Wyatt and another three Curb Stomps still couldn’t keep the Fiend down. Rollins hit the Pedigree and another Curb Stomp for a one count. Another several Curb Stomps didn’t phase Wyatt.

Wyatt was finally down and Rollins nailed him with a chair shot to the head for a one count. Rollins hit Wyatt with a ladder for a near fall. The BeastSlayer hit Wyatt, with a ladder on top of him, with a tool box. Rollins got a sledgehammer but the referee stopped him. Rollins hit the ladder on top of Wyatt with the hammer and the referee called for the bell, leading to some confusion as to whether it was a disqualification or a no contest. Rollins tried to attack Wyatt when officials were helping him but Wyatt locked in the Mandible Claw. The Fiend hit Rollins with another Sister Abigail on exposed concrete and locked in the Mandible Claw again.
