Chavo Guerrero On Working Smart And Making Moves Matter In The Ring, The Original GLOW Girls Getting Their Due

Chavo Guerrero was a recent guest on the Steve Austin Show and the “Mexican Warrior” had a great deal to share about working smart can make you a better wrestler and how you can tell a story without doing too much in the ring. Chavo used the example of Rey Mysterio’s career as a way were he can make moves mean more today by doing less. He noted the moves end up being part of the story and not the whole thing.

“Rey Mysterio can do so much more stuff when he was younger, but he’s such a better wrestler now, because instead of doing 10 head scissors he does one head scissors at the right time. He can sell. He sells his ass off. It’s not just moveset, he knows when to do it. He knows when to do a move. Less is more.

The moves help tell the story, but they are not the story. When you’re watching a move and you see explosions – explosions are great, they help tell the story, but they’re not the story! After watching some of these movie and seeing 30 minutes of explosions, okay, great. Tell me a story. Put me on that roller coaster with not just boom, pow, bang, bang! Tell me a story, let me get invested in this character.”

Chavo has also been working on the GLOW series on Netflix as a trainer and stunt coordinator, and spoke about how the show has impacted the lives of the original wrestlers from the ’80s. Chavo said these girls went from being a joke to now being appreciated for their accomplishments.

“I’m so happy for those original GLOW girls to now get their just due because when that show first came out, they were shunned. They were looked down upon in the wrestling world, they were like, ‘You’re not wrestlers, that’s not what we do,’ and now to see them honored at the Cauliflower Alley be these pioneers of wrestling, that’s great for them.”
