At WWE Extreme Rules, Samoa Joe unsuccessfully challenged Kofi Kingston for the WWE Championship. Meanwhile, Finn Bálor lost his Intercontinental Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura. On RAW this week, Joe and Bálor met in a singles match and both men hoped to get back in the win column. Joe hit Bálor with some stiff strikes and quickly rolled him up for the victory. Joe attacked Bálor after the match but the former Intercontinental Champion stood tall after he hit the Coup de Grace. But some strange music played, the lights went out and Bray Wyatt stood in the ring when they came back on. Wyatt, dressed like the Fiend from Firefly Funhouse, hit Bálor with Sister Abigail.
