Dustin Rhodes On Being Caught Off-Guard By Cody’s ‘Brother’ Promo, Facing The Young Bucks At Fight For The Fallen

Dustin Rhodes was a special guest on the most recent episode of “Sports Guys Talking Wrestling” with The Horn’s Stew Myrick out of Austin, TX. “The Natural” joined the show before he reunites on the same side of the apron with his brother Cody to go up against The Young Bucks at AEW Fight For The Fallen on Saturday.

Dustin goes into detail with Stew about that promo Cody cut after the two brothers battled at Double or Nothing and says he had no idea that Cody was going to roll back in the ring and plead his case that he needed his brother, hearkening back to the 1993 promo their father, Dusty Rhodes cut to Dustin in WCW. Dustin also talks about what he’s most excited for going up against one of the most athletic duos in Matt & Nick Jackson.

Dustin Rhodes on Cody’s “I Need My Brother” promo at Double or Nothing:

“Well first, I didn’t know any of that was going to take place, I thought, ‘Okay, you know, I just put over my brother, we had a hell of a show, I’m very happy and excited and I’m glad I could do it,’ and I had no idea that he was going to come back in. I genuinely had told Cody that ‘I’m going to take off my boots and leave them in the ring,’ and he rolled back in. And I saw him out of the corner of my eye, I saw him, kind of standing and kind of standing around like he was just watching me you know.”

“I had no idea he was going to say the things he did or even cut a promo much less, but he put his own spin on the promo that dad cut to me back in the day and I just rolled in the corner and all I wanted to was retire and he pulled me back in and he said he needed his brother as his partner for Fight For The Fallen so I’m thinking to myself, ‘Jesus Chr*st, Cody! What the hell? I mean I just went to war with you and you flip the script on me and you want one more? I mean my God I’m 50, let me pick and choose here!

MYRICK: “Go get your pizza and then we’ll talk, right?”

DUSTIN: “I wanted a pizza, yeah and he cut that promo and it was emotional man and as soon as he started that promo, I knew exactly what he was doing and I’m thinking ahead now because he’s not done with the promo yet and I’m thinking, ‘What does he want me to do? When is this and what does he want?'”

On going up against The Young Bucks and what it will be like to tag with Cody once more:

“I’ve worked with The Usos, Seth, Dean and Roman. We’ve been through all of the top tag teams up there and beat them all and that stands for something. So I know that our chemistry—Cody’s and my chemistry—it’s going to be like riding a bike for us, like we’ve never left each other’s side and I’m hoping to get with him so we can practice a couple of new things that the world has not seen yet. Just like I did in Double or Nothing, I wanted to pull something that people have never seen from a 6’5″ 50 year-old before. So that’s what I’m looking forward to and feeling these kids out and seeing really who the crowd is behind, whether it’s behind them or behind both of us. Because we’re both like a babyface team and it’s for a good cause so I’m very excited about it. I know Cody is.”
