Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens earned a surprising victory over Big E and Xavier Woods at Stomping Grounds. The next night on RAW, Zayn faced WWE Champion Kofi Kingston. Before the match, Zayn and Owens held an impromptu edition of the Kevin & Sami show. The duo asked Kingston a series of disrespectful questions. Zayn called Kingston out for his reliance on his friends. Kingston reminded his foes that he has beaten Owens a few times. The champion said he’s tired of hearing Zayn talk, which kickstarted the match. After a competitive contest, Kingston rolled Zayn up for the win.

Zayn used his technical expertise to gain the upper hand but Kingston persevered. A rollup nearly earned Zayn an upset victory. Owens attacked the champion at ringside when the referee was distracted. Zayn capitalized on the assault but Kingston still fought back. A stuff kick floored Kingston but Kingston eventually rolled Zayn up for the win. Owens challenged Kingston to a match on the spot and the champion accepted. Though Kingston was exhausted after the first match, he was ready for Owens. The champion planted Owens with an S.O.S. on the ramp and won the match via count out.
After the match, Samoa Joe attacked Kingston and slammed him on the ramp. Joe choked Kingston out when officials tried to help the champion.
