Steve Austin: Wrestlers Should Start ‘Planting Those Seeds’ For Life After WWE

In an appearance on episode 258 of The Dale Jr Download, Stone Cold Steve Austin tells host Dale Jr. that he sidetracked himself “with three years of nothing” when he originally left WWE. Once he went to LA and started work on other projects, business picked up again. “Had I said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go do this!’ I’d have planned it out a lot better.”

So, his advice for other WWE Superstars in the system now? Be prepared, but know where your bread is buttered.

Given the platform right now, always keep your platform and your main job in the WWE. If you’ve got some feelers out there, if you’re trying to network other things based on the fact that you’ve got a high Q-Rating or a lot of television exposure, do it! Right now, this is your bread and butter, but start planting those seeds so when you spin out of this, you come out with momentum.

Of course, it can be hard for any WWE star to gain momentum in today’s system. Steve Austin said that he didn’t have a “restrictor plate” on him when he rose up the card, so he could get away with much more than today’s crop of stars.

It’s a way more friendly setting and there’s a lot more control on television. Back in the day, I went to Brian Pillman’s house one time. I broke into his house with a baseball bat and he pulled a gun on me on Monday Night RAW. Shots were fired. There was a call from the network, there was some explaining to be done, but we’d done it. My point is, I don’t think anyone can push that envelope as hard as we did, and I really think that’s how it is.

Echoing a statement common among wrestling onlookers nowadays, it seems that Stone Cold just wants WWE to let their performers perform a bit more. “I ain’t saying you gotta go crazy, you just got to turn ’em loose a little bit.”
