MLW has been a major player in the pro wrestling world ever since returning in 2017.

With exclusive acts like Tom Lawlor and the Hart Foundation, Major League Wrestling consistently provides one of the most entertaining products in professional wrestling television today.

The Orlando Sentinel recently caught up with MLW head-honcho Court Bauer, who took some time to reflect on his own journey and where the professional wrestling industry is headed today. Below are some quotes:

Court Bauer on MLW’s return in 2017:

“The company had gotten a lot of buzz, so I thought I knew the fan base,” Bauer said. “But then the match started, and the fans weren’t too familiar with the guys. I had an epiphany. I had to remind myself that this shouldn’t be a diehard product if it was going to be successful. I tried to craft the shows in a different way moving forward.”

“I could have done it as a one-time thing,” Bauer said. “That’s how it was intended in the first place, before I saw what it could be. I could get the talent for one show, but I’m not sure I would use it to build a runway for something bigger, because it’s going to be a very volatile year. I’m glad we’ve had the last year and a half to build the foundation.”

Court Bauer on the landscape of pro wrestling:

“There’s four or five companies now vying for diehard fans on the open market, when you think of NXT, Ring of Honor, Impact and AEW,” Bauer said. “How does MLW compete? By finding another avenue.

“When we premiered on TV, we did very well on BeIN en Espanol, the Spanish-language channel. So if that’s where the audience is, let’s run with it. I have Konnan, the godfather of lucha libre, as my consigliere, good relationships with a large pool of talent, and experience working for AAA and Lucha Underground. And it has worked.”

“Look at history: What killed WCW? Was it WWE, or was it WCW’s own incompetence?” Bauer said. “The biggest weakness is ego. There’s so much time wasted thinking about politics and what the next guy is doing. We just need to focus on our own product.”
