Details On The Main Event Change For WWE Royal Rumble

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer is reporting via his “Wrestling Observer Radio” with Bryan Alvarez that Braun Strowman was never supposed to be in the main event of WWE Royal Rumble against Brock Lesnar. Lesnar facing Finn Balor has been apart of the plans for quite a while.

According to Meltzer, plans began to change around WWE Crown Jewel as the idea was to set up Strowman vs. Lesnar at Royal Rumble, but Vince McMahon began to change his mind at some point and the idea wasn’t to beat Brock, but for Brock to go over so he could face Seth Rollins at WrestleMania. Vince felt it wasn’t a good idea because Braun was cooling off, plus he needed elbow surgery. Since Vince couldn’t afford Braun to get beaten again, the choices came down for Braun to win the title (which wasn’t going to happen), have a screwy finish (which he didn’t want to do) or just not have the match. The latter obviously happened.

Lesnar wanted to work with Balor over a year ago as Lesnar likes to works with the AJ Styles & Daniel Bryan types because they pull the best matches out of him. Meltzer is currently unsure that if Strowman has been cleared to wrestle at all.
