Tetsuya Naito is one of the top three Japanese stars in NJPW today. He is scheduled to face Chris Jericho at Wrestle Kingdom 13 for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. He lost the title to Chris Jericho back in June at an event called Dominion. In a recent interview with Tokyo Sports, Naito revealed that he was offered a WWE contract right after this event and the match with Jericho but he turned it down immediately and goes on to explain why. Credit to Chris Charlton (@reasonjp) for the translation:

‘I didn’t even give it thought. This New Japan ring is already the world’s number 1 stage. The fans know this. That’s why I think we should focus on our home crowd before looking international’

‘You should understand that I have no interest in “WWE Superstar” Chris Jericho. What I want to do is get revenge for what happened in a New Japan ring, in a New Japan ring’

It’s interesting that Tetsuya Naito would turn down a contract so emphatically. Perhaps he’s not a fan of what WWE has done with Shinsuke Nakamura, or perhaps he just has a grand design on what can be done in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Either way, it looks like the only person telling people in the WWE Universe to stay tranquillo will be Andrade Cien Almas. How do you think Naito would fare in the WWE?
