2006 was the year where WWE fully started to build the company around John Cena. By the time WrestleMania 22 had come along, Cena had been a full year into his tenure as WWE’s franchise player. Naturally, he was making them a lot of money and his stock was rising despite the fact that he had already become somewhat of a “polarizing” figure, as WWE always calls him.

While the overall match quality did take a slight dip around 2006, the upper echelon of performers were killing it as usual, putting on great matches one after the other. That’s what truly separates the top stars from the rest and it was none more so evident than in 2006.
