After losing the Intercontinental Championship to Chris Jericho, Naito was given the task to bring it back to NJPW full-time. While it was nice to see Jericho as a special attraction, he basically had just one title defense in a lengthy run, with many people comparing him to Brock Lesnar.
They had a showdown at Wrestle Kingdom in the co-main event, and it was a NO DQ bout. Jericho showed a nasty side of himself that we rarely got to see, and Naito fought back in a fantastic effort. The match was an instant classic and Naito would regain the IWGP Intercontinental title.
