First Round Losers

survivor seriesThe WWE title tournament at Survivor Series provides a legit opportunity to elevate somebody to the next level.

But WWE would be better advised to put the championship on one of its very few proven commodities: Brock Lesnar, if he’ll work even a few more dates (or even if he won’t). Or John Cena, if he can take a day from his scheduled hiatus.

Predictable? Sure. Trite, even.

But there’s no point elevating somebody. Elevating somebody is nearly impossible, because there’s nobody to beat. It’s the fallout of trading wins, of keeping everybody at .500. Unless the eventual champ defeats both Lesnar and Cena during the course of a tournament, how can WWE otherwise elevate?

Say Roman Reigns beats Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler and Rusev en route to the title. So what? Nobody cares about any of those guys. Switch any of those three into the winner’s spot, and add Reigns to the list of those beaten, and I repeat: So what?  Sheamus, Dean Ambrose, Wade Barrett, the Miz, Ryback: So what?

WWE has too many first-round losers to hold an enthralling world title tournament. Like PWTorch.com’s Bruce Mitchell says, it’s the mid-card era.
