Mick Foley Names His Favorite Writers; Credits Stephen King For Non-Horror Work

Mick Foley sure knows how to tell a story in the ring and he sure knows how to write one as well. The New York Times Best-Selling author spoke with Dominic DeAngelo of WrestleZone to get the word out about Tag Me In United, a communal campaign in wrestling that hopes to break the stigma of mental health. At the end of the conversation, Mick was asked about some of his favorite writers. The Hardcore Legend first names John Irving and credits him for building great stories around interesting characters, but also names a horror legend as someone who stands out to him.

“I think Stephen King is underrated as a great writer” Mick said before his son Mickey took exception to a writing legend like King being underrated. Mick clarified.

“I think he is underrated critically, especially some of his stuff that is not horror-specific. Like there was a collection of short novellas. ‘The Body’, which turned out to be ‘Stand By Me,’ ‘Apt Pupil’ which was a movie, Rita Hayworth, ‘Shawshank Redemption’ which became ‘Shawshank Redemption’ so one book of four novellas turned out two amazing movies and one pretty good movie so I’d say he is a guy who’s underrated.” Mick does say he doesn’t nearly read as much as he did back in the day, but gives another name that he’s a fan of.

“Jonathan Kellerman was a crime novelist and he wrote about characters with psychosises and so sometimes you can find yourself in a strange way empathizing with the bad guy or woman even if you weren’t sympathizing with him if that makes any sense.

“We do really well in that gray area in pro wrestling,” Mick adds. You can listen to the full interview below or watch the video above.
