NBC is bringing back a beloved 1990s sitcom with a new star and a different approach. The network is developing a reboot of Coach, with Modern Family actor Ty Burrell expected to lead the series.
According to Deadline, Burrell will also serve as an executive producer on the project. Daniel Libman and Matthew Libman, the creators behind Peacock’s sports comedy Mr. Throwback, are developing the series. Universal Television will produce the project with Davis Entertainment.
What will change in NBC’s new Coach reboot?
The new project will shift from the original multi-camera format to a single-camera comedy. It will also replace football with college basketball. The story will follow a legendary coach who returns to his hometown in Minnesota to rebuild his alma mater’s college basketball program. He will also try to reconnect with the local community.
The original Coach premiered on ABC in 1989 and ran for nine seasons. It starred Craig T. Nelson as Hayden Fox, the head football coach at the fictional Minnesota State University. The show later followed Fox as he moved to coach a professional football team.
This is not NBC’s first attempt to revive the sitcom. In 2015, the network ordered 13 episodes of a sequel starring Nelson. That version would have followed a retired Fox returning to coaching alongside his grown son. However, NBC scrapped the project after filming its pilot episode.
Burrell is best known for playing Phil Dunphy on Modern Family. The role earned him eight consecutive Emmy nominations and two wins. The actor also received a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on the comedy.
The reboot marks a return to live-action television for Burrell since Modern Family ended in 2020. Meanwhile, the Libman brothers bring experience in sports comedy through Mr. Throwback, which starred Adam Pally and basketball star Stephen Curry.
NBC has not announced a premiere date or confirmed a series order for the new Coach. The project remains in development, and further casting details have not been announced.
