While preparing for and shooting Blade Runner 2099, Hunter Schafer underwent intense physical training. However, to do so, the 27-year-old had to overcome one major physical hurdle.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Schafer discussed her rigorous physical routine on the sets of the sci-fi TV miniseries. As Cora, the actress and model had to prepare for a high-octane chase sequence. But due to her smoking habits, she initially found it difficult to adapt.
Schafer said, “I definitely was getting exercise and eating more. My body kind of had to adapt to that kind of lifestyle. Also, I was a smoker at the time we filmed the chase scene, so it was definitely a little hard on the lungs. It was lots of running — over and over and over again.”
Thankfully, with strong commitment and dedication, Schafer finally overcame her breathing troubles. As a result, she earned the respect of her co-stars and the stunt team.
Michelle Yeoh helped shape Hunter Schafer’s fighting style
Michelle Yeoh proved to be a great mentor to Hunter Schafer as the two worked together on Blade Runner 2099. With her experience in martial arts movies and action sequences, Yeoh knows how actors should perform in a fight scene, so she advised Schafer.
To make it easier for the Euphoria actress, Yeoh spoke with the stunts team about how to stage scenes for Schafer.
Yeoh reflected on her experience and shared, “Hunter’s tall, she’s got long legs, long hands, and she has a very unique way of moving. So I sat with our stunt coordinator and said, ‘You have to work with that, because that will make the character special, because she is so special. Don’t start her fighting like your stunt people. It has to be the Hunter’s style of fighting.'”
Furthermore, the Malaysian actress praised Schafer and said, “She threw herself into that physical world. She was so smart, she picked it up so quickly, and she was very agile.”
However, Yeoh was also a little concerned about the Cuckoo star, as she didn’t want her to get hurt during the fight scenes. Sharing her concerns, she added, “But I was a little bit worried with young Hunter. I didn’t want her to get hurt. And this was her first real big action series. And when you’re not used to it, you don’t know what to watch out for unless you’ve trained for years to do that.”
