Barry Keoghan will lead a fan-favorite Netflix prequel show following his Peaky Blinders stint. The online streaming platform has recently greenlit the five-episode crime drama series.
According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Keoghan is confirmed to reprise his role as Jonny McGee in the upcoming Top Boy prequel, Jonny Boy. Produced by Cowboy Films, the project will also see Drake return as the executive producer. The rapper was also part of Top Boy, which won a BAFTA.
The award-winning actor will also co-produce the show alongside Des Bryne for Wolfcub Productions. Other executive producers on the project include Ali Abbasi, Maverick Carter, and Jamal Henderson (SpringHill Studios), Ronan Bennett (Easter Partisan Films), and Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind (Cowboy Films).
Keoghan’s credits include Peaky Blinders, Banshees of Inisherin, Saltburn, and more. He is scheduled to play Ringo Starr in the upcoming Beatles biopic.

Jonny McGee is expected to play the antagonist once again in the Netflix prequel. Barry Keoghan portrayed a powerful leader of the Irish mob. He was in charge of the distribution of illegal drugs and worked under his uncle, Tadgh McGee, in London. While the plot of the new series is unknown, it is expected that Jonny Boy will retain the elements that made Top Boy a massive success.
Keoghan and Des Bryne teased that fans will be witnessing McGee’s origin story “through a new bold lens.” The duo elaborated on the project in their statement, “Wolfcub Productions is proud to bring Jonny McGee — the character introduced in Top Boy’s third and final season — to the screen in Jonny Boy. We pitched our vision and idea to Netflix and the executive producers, and they were so supportive in wanting to bring our passion project forward, exploring Jonny McGee’s origin story through a new bold lens.”
Jonny Boy will have the original creator of Top Boy, Ronan Bennett, join the cast. Directed by Ali Abbasi, Jonny Boy is set to start filming in 2027.
