New Girl fans have received a disappointing reunion update after recent comments sparked excitement about the show’s return. Creator Liz Meriwether has addressed online speculation in a recent interview.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Meriwether was asked whether the ongoing reunion buzz was just coordinated trolling. The sitcom creator responded, “I don’t know how this happened or how it got so out of control. I love it, though.” The showrunner also added that she has no interest in appearing on camera herself, saying, “I don’t wanna put myself in it. I absolutely should not be acting.”
However, Meriwether suggested turning the ongoing situation into an unusual reunion project. “If we ever did a reunion, it should just be this… The Blair Witch Project-style, shot on iPhones, everybody is kind of talking about wanting to have a reunion.”

Rumors began spiraling after Max Greenfield claimed on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle that a scripted reunion was officially moving forward. Greenfield, who played Schmidt throughout the sitcom’s seven-season run, went so far as to call the alleged scripts “amazing.”
According to Meriwether, Greenfield’s comment spread quickly, with “people pretty high up in the organization” calling around to ask whether reunion scripts actually existed.
Greenfield later clarified that he had simply misread an email. The subject line read “New Girl reunion,” leading him to assume the cast was assembling for new episodes. The 46-year-old actor admitted he had only read the subject line before making his television announcement.
In reality, the cast is reuniting for a charity event rather than a new season. Stars Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, and Damon Wayans Jr. are coming together to receive the Rising Phoenix Award at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball this October.
While the cast’s real-life gathering is still set for the fall, Meriwether’s comments make one thing clear: there is no new script and no new season on the way.
