Beloved 97% RT Netflix Action Series Renewed for Third & Final Season

Netflix just confirmed the end is coming for one of its most acclaimed animated series. The streamer revealed major updates for the Emmy-winning show’s future, including premiere details and a final season announcement.

Blue Eye Samurai renewed by Netflix for final season

Netflix has renewed Blue Eye Samurai, which holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, for a third and final season. The streamer also revealed a January 2027 premiere window for Season 2 alongside a new teaser trailer. Season 3 has already begun production and is currently set to debut in 2028.

The announcement came during Anime NYC, the East Coast’s biggest anime convention. Created by married duo Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, the animated action series follows mixed-race Japanese warrior Mizu. Maya Erskine voices the protagonist, who seeks vengeance against four white men who remained illegally in Japan after the Tokugawa shogunate closed its borders.

The Season 2 teaser previews Mizu’s treacherous journey across the ocean to London. “I choose revenge,” Mizu declares in the footage as waves threaten to devour her ship. Season 2 has recently finished production, according to the official announcement from Netflix.

The official Season 2 description teases parallel storylines unfolding back in Japan as well. “In Japan, Akemi [Brenda Song] and Taigen [Darren Barnet] navigate Edo Castle under a dangerous new Shogun, while Ringo [Masi Oka] searches for new purpose.” Netflix has dubbed the upcoming third and final season the “epic conclusion” to the series.

Noizumi and Green previously teased several details about the second season’s narrative direction. Green mentioned the season begins with Mizu “breaking in somewhere to kill someone.” Noizumi hinted that “some people you thought died… maybe are still alive.” She also stated in a featurette that “Mizu’s journey remains the same; revenge is her religion.”

Green further added that Mizu believes at least two of her targets will be “somewhere in this magical place called London.” The show debuted on Netflix in 2023 and has won four Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program for its first season.
