Shōgun Season 2 finally receives a major update on its casting following months of silence. The popular historical drama from FX was originally released two years ago as a limited TV series, but fans have been curious for a follow-up.
What is the big casting update for Shōgun Season 2?
The long-awaited second season of Shōgun received a major casting announcement as production ramps up. Actor Rick Kumazawa (Grey’s Anatomy, You) will appear in a recurring role for Season 2, according to Deadline. While specific character details remain closely guarded, Kumazawa will play a figure named Gaspar.
The casting follows a wave of previously announced newcomers, including Asami Mizukawa (A Beloved Wife), Masataka Kubota (Yell), Takaaki Enoki (Hanjiro), Sho Kaneta, Jun Kunimura, Ren Meguro, Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi, and Takashi Yamaguchi.
Returning members from Season 1 include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri. Shōgun Season 2’s production began earlier this year in Vancouver.
The FX TV show is based on James Clavell’s bestselling 1975 novel. The series is co-created by Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks and produced by FX Productions.
Kondo and Marks are serving as executive producers. Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Hiroyuki Sanada are also executive producing.
When the TV series first arrived in 2024, it left critics and audiences highly impressed. Currently, Season 1 holds a near-perfect Tomatometer score of 99% and an amazing Popcornmeter score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, it managed to become the first-ever FX TV show to win Outstanding Drama Series while winning 18 Emmy Awards in total.
Shōgun Season 2 will exclusively stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ globally. FX has not yet set an official premiere date.
