Sam Levinson explains Euphoria Season 3’s most ‘anxiety-inducing’ death

Euphoria Season 3 Episode 7 saw Jacob Elordi‘s Nate Jacobs die from a rattlesnake bite after loan sharks buried him alive.

Breaking down Nate’s death, showrunner Sam Levinson recently revealed that the driving force behind his fate was extreme discomfort. He was arguably the most hated character among Euphoria fans. Nate had long been seen as someone who got what he deserved, and Levinson wanted to deliver exactly that with a fittingly cruel ending.

“There’s this kind of funny thing where I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma and with that in mind, I always think, ‘Well, how can I give it to them?”, he told in an interview with Esquire. “How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn’t so sure they wanted it?”

Levinson clarified that Nate was always intended to be deeply troubling from the beginning of Season 3. While the current season showed glimpses of his humanity, his overall arc was crafted to make his brutal death feel satisfying for viewers. “It’s like, ‘Oh, you wanted him to get his comeuppance…? Okay,” he said. “You end up going, ‘Oh God, I don’t know. Should he have had it better? Did he deserve it?’ Those kinds of questions are always exciting to pose to the audience.”

Recently, Elordi had also commented on Nate’s grim death. “Nate is someone who’s made so many mistakes and made so many dark choices,” he said. According to him, it was a cool way to go.

Euphoria Season 3 finale episode is set to hit HBO Max on May 31, 2026.
