Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for a new adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The upcoming French period drama film promises a macabre retelling of the classic tale.
The Hunchback, Soul of Paris premieres on Netflix on November 27, 2026. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film is based on Victor Hugo’s 1831 Gothic novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
The film takes a vastly different approach from previous cinematic adaptations, most notably Disney’s 1996 animated musical. Richet’s rendition fully embraces the darker elements of the original book, focusing on its ghastly atmosphere and visuals.

What do we see in The Hunchback, Soul of Paris trailer?
The Hunchback, Soul of Paris is set in 1830s Paris, a city plagued by cholera and growing revolutionary unrest. The story follows Quasimodo, a hunchbacked stonemason pursued by the police as he risks everything to save Esmeralda, a dancer he has fallen in love with.
Additionally, Quasimodo turns out to be immune to cholera, making him the target of a scientist who wants to experiment on his body.
The trailer introduces Vincent Cassel as the titular hunchback and offers a glimpse into the bleak and unsettling ambience. The preview features some of the most dramatic and intense scenes from the film, teasing the dark tale it has in store for viewers.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair France, director Richet shared his inspiration behind the film. “According to an English archivist, Adrian Glew, the character is based on a stonemason the novelist supposedly met. So we’re starting from a plausible premise rather than a true story,” he explained.
Discussing the casting process, the filmmaker shared, “I had to find an actor very quickly, almost over the weekend. So I called [Cassel] on Friday evening, specifying that I needed an answer by the following Monday. He read the script and found it promising.”
The Hunchback, Soul of Paris also stars Karim Leklou, Daphné Patakia, and Benjamin Voisin.
