During a recent interview with GQ, Prince Harry said he can respect the British press, but there’s a condition. The Duke of Sussex seemed hopeful about drawing a line under the past. However, he also said that he is not naive anymore.
Prince Harry says ‘he can respect British press if they respect him’ in new interview
According to an interview with GQ, Prince Harry sat down with writer Zach Baron at the magazine’s New York office. Baron asked whether things have changed since the Sussexes left the U.K., citing media circumstances. Harry reportedly said that their attitude has changed.
The Duke claimed that once you have been through it and spoken about it, “people see it for what it is.” Harry added that this “makes the environment slightly easier.” He said some battles were fought “necessarily so,” but he also hoped everyone can “draw a line under that.”
Furthermore, the Duke said that he, his family, and some of the British press would all like to leave parts of the past behind and work for the greater good. “I am optimistic. I’m hopeful. I’m not naive,” he said. “I can respect them if they respect me and our position,” Harry added, claiming that their position is “really quite clear now.”
Meanwhile, Harry said that he would rather put his own story out there than let “the machine” create stuff. He claimed that the stories don’t stop even if you stay quiet. According to him, the vast majority are “made up, untrue,” or badly sourced. He also alleged that he has been criticized for telling his story, while everyone else gets to tell their version. “God forbid, I should be able to tell the other side of it,” he said.
However, Harry also said that he wants to support journalism. He claimed that he grew up surrounded by some of the worst forms of it. He took issue with people who pretend to be journalists, saying he “will be damned” if they “drag this whole profession down the drain.”
