Donald Trump praised JD Vance in the Oval Office, but there’s one thing that the president won’t promise the vice president. Trump addressed his political future with Vance during a joint White House appearance, and his answer is making headlines.
Donald Trump praises JD Vance during Oval Office meeting
President Donald Trump publicly refused to back Vice President JD Vance’s likely 2028 presidential campaign during a joint Oval Office appearance on Tuesday, The Daily Beast reported. Trump closed his eyes and shook his head when a reporter raised the topic. He then cut the question short.
“He’s a very talented person and a very good person, but literally, I don’t think we’ve ever talked about it,” Trump said. “It’s early, very early.” The moment came just one day after Vance told journalist Mark Halperin he believed Trump would endorse him if he ran.
Vance quickly tried to align himself with Trump’s position during the exchange. “I said that too,” the Vice President responded. He agreed the two had not discussed his likely 2028 campaign. Both men said their current focus remains on the upcoming midterm elections.
The midterms have grown increasingly competitive, even in traditionally Republican states like Kansas. Democrats currently hold a polling advantage to take control of both the House and the Senate. Republicans worry that a Democratic sweep would put Trump on the defensive. Congressional probes and impeachment efforts could dominate the second half of his term.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also considered a top 2028 contender for Republicans. On the same day as the Oval Office exchange, Rubio delivered a speech in Athens, Greece. He spoke about the importance of Western civilization. Trump has been particularly warm toward Rubio this term. “He’s a master,” Trump said during a Hispanic Heritage Month event at the White House last month. “He’s an unbelievable man, really amazing.” Trump had previously nicknamed him “Little Marco” during his first presidential campaign.
