According to The Sun, Martin Freeman, 55, and Rachel Benaissa, 34, married quietly earlier this year. The pair made a rare red carpet appearance at the London Film Festival earlier this month, and onlookers noticed Benaissa reportedly wearing an engagement ring. A spokesperson for the actor confirmed the news to the outlet.
Benaissa wore an emerald stone flanked by two diamonds on a gold band. Freeman also had a gold band on his wedding finger. He was at the event to promote his new film, “A Long Winter,” and posed with co-stars Fred Hechinger and Caitriona Balfe.
According to the outlet, Martin Freeman and Rachel Benaissa began dating in 2020. Benaissa is a French writer and actor, and her credits include “Normal People,” “This Way Up” and the Netflix film “Irish Wish.” The couple maintain privacy and keep details of their relationship largely private.
Freeman did offer a glimpse of home life on the “Table Manners” podcast last year, reports the outlet. Speaking about his partner’s tastes, he noted that she particularly enjoys “cheese and wine.” He added that the two enjoy cooking together, saying, “We like cooking.”
The 55-year-old actor was previously in a relationship with his “Sherlock” costar Amanda Abbington for around 16 years. They played John and Mary Watson opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, and they split in 2016. Abbington cited long periods apart while filming as part of the reason their relationship ended.
Freeman and Abbington share two children, Grace, 18, and Joe, 20. Abbington is now engaged to escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, 43.
