President Donald Trump used two rallies this week to joke about his wife, Melania Trump, and what he says she dislikes about his stage routine. In Arizona and Alaska, Trump said the first lady objects to his impressions of certain things. He then performed both for the crowds.
Donald Trump tells crowd how Melania hates certain things he does
At a Wednesday rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, Trump described his wife’s frustration while discussing an unidentified trans weightlifter. “My wife is going crazy with me,” he told the crowd. He then relayed her complaint: “She hates… she said, ‘You’re president of the United States, you shouldn’t be doing this.'” Rather than heed the advice, Trump launched into an impression of an athlete hoisting a barbell overhead, grunts included.
The president said Melania also dislikes his “YMCA” dance. According to Trump, she told him he “shouldn’t be dancing on the stage, either,” and suggested he instead “walk off with a gentle wave.” He mimicked that suggestion onstage, waving and saying, “Goodbye, everyone.” Trump went further, quoting her plea: “She said, ‘You should not dance off the stage, my darling. I love you very much, but please, don’t do that.'” He also labeled “YMCA” the “gay national anthem” and claimed the song helped him earn the “highest gay vote of any Republican in history.”
Donald Trump raised the subject again Tuesday in Wasilla, Alaska. “My wife hates when I talk about this,” he said, noting she calls it “so unelegant, darling.” After criticizing a trans swimmer, he returned to the weightlifter. “I’m telling you, my wife doesn’t like these stories,” Trump said, adding that he told her, “I just won the damn election in a landslide, leave me alone.”
He mimicked the weightlifter once more, then said: “Oh, my wife hates this… she said it’s so damn unpresidential.” Trump called his impressions “cool” and asked the crowd whether to continue. They cheered, and he did. The president argued that transgender athletes competing in women’s sports were “so demeaning” to women, though he offered no similar concern about publicly teasing his wife.
