Savannah Guthrie and Laura Jarrett both appeared on Today, but viewers noticed Guthrie was absent from the anchor desk on Wednesday. Her absence was due to a special assignment in Ireland, where she and several fellow hosts are preparing for the morning show’s upcoming live broadcasts.
Why Laura Jarrett filled in for Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday
Savannah Guthrie was absent from the Today anchor desk this week after traveling to Ireland ahead of the morning show’s special broadcasts from the country. Laura Jarrett filled in for Guthrie during Wednesday’s episode, while several other hosts prepared for the show’s upcoming overseas coverage.
During the show’s Morning Boost segment, Jenna Bush Hager shared updates from colleagues who had already arrived in Ireland. Carson Daly appeared in a video message from Adare Manor in County Limerick, the venue set to host the 2027 Ryder Cup.
“Hey, guys! I’m fresh off the plane. Like a true Irishman, golf fanatic, I have come straight from the airport, right here to this special venue.” Daly said, sharing his excitement about arriving at the golf destination.
He added, “I’m gonna learn all about this special venue. We’re gonna talk about all things golf in Ireland and have an awesome day. I can’t wait.” The segment also featured a video message from Guthrie, who had arrived in Ireland several hours earlier.
In the video shared on Instagram, Guthrie offered viewers a glimpse of the iconic Cliffs of Moher while sharing her excitement about the upcoming broadcasts. “Hey, everybody, and good morning from Ireland. I got a little head start on all you.” She also marveled at Ireland’s scenic beauty and reminded her colleagues to be ready for the country’s famously unpredictable weather.
She added, “They say they get four seasons in one day here in Ireland, and I can confirm that is true.” Guthrie wrapped up her message by describing the country as “beautiful, magical, enchanting” and expressing her excitement about sharing the experience with viewers.
Back in the studio, Bush Hager joked that Guthrie looked refreshed despite getting only four hours of sleep. Al Roker was also away from the anchor desk after traveling to Ireland for the special coverage.
Meanwhile, Jarrett stepped in to fill Guthrie’s spot temporarily, rather than taking over as her permanent replacement. All four hours of Today are scheduled to air live from Ireland on October 16.
