Carrie Coon has offered a fresh update on the future of Ghostbusters 5, bringing renewed attention to the long-awaited fifth installment. The actor recently discussed the project during an appearance at the BFI London Film Festival, giving fans an idea of where things stand.
Carrie Coon gives an update on Ghostbusters 5
Carrie Coon has little fresh information about the fifth film. Speaking with ScreenRant at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival, the actor said she had not contacted the creative team in some time. She knows Jason Reitman once had an idea for the next installment, but she remains unsure what he intends to do with it.
Reitman’s other commitments may help explain the wait. Coon noted that he has been busy “restoring all the theaters in Los Angeles,” including his own. She joked about the lengthy gap between installments, saying, “We always joke that I’ll be dead, and I’ll just be a nagging ghost, but we’ll see if that’s the plan.”
There was reason to expect another movie. Gil Kenan, who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire and directed the latter, confirmed plans for a sequel in October 2024. Yet the project has produced few public updates since then, leaving its development status unclear.
Sony has financial reasons to think twice before greenlighting another big-screen adventure. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire brought in nearly $202 million worldwide in 2024, missing its estimated $250 million break-even target. That also put it at the bottom of the franchise’s box-office rankings, leaving the studio with a tougher case to make for another expensive theatrical sequel.
Still, the film left several threads dangling for a potential follow-up. With Garraka defeated, New York Mayor Walter Peck finally threw his support behind the Ghostbusters, while Phoebe secured permission to keep working with the team despite her age. The destruction of the containment unit created another problem, too, leading to a fresh wave of escaped spirits that the crew would have to track down.
