What to know about Quentin Tarantino’s first-ever stage production, The Popinjay Cavalier
Quentin Tarantino’s The Popinjay Cavalier is a comedy about deception and disguise set in 1830s Europe. According to the official synopsis, it’s a “celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit. The Popinjay Cavalier is inspired by the classic swashbuckler genre of old Hollywood, including the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr.”
The development of the play started back in 2024 and was officially announced in March 2026. Tarantino began writing the script in January 2025 and later confirmed that it was complete. The Popinjay Cavalier is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Sonia Friedman and Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, said, “It is a joy and an honor to be developing this play with Quentin — and absolutely quite an adventure.”
The project’s creative team includes Tom Pye as costume designer and Natasha Chivers as lighting designer, alongside sound designer Ian Dickinson, fight director Philip d’Orleans, and action coordinator Sam Lyon-Behan. Tim Phillips is composing the music.
