Chadwick Boseman’s 42 is leaving Netflix next month
Chadwick Boseman’s baseball biopic 42 is set to leave Netflix US next month. According to What’s on Netflix, the film will be removed from the streaming platform on November 1, 2026.
Written and directed by Brian Helgeland, 42 premiered in theaters on April 12, 2013. The film follows Jackie Robinson as he is given the opportunity to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946, when Black athletes faced widespread exclusion from Major League Baseball. Dodgers executive Branch Rickey recruits Robinson despite anticipating the backlash their decision will provoke.
As Robinson begins his career with the team, he encounters significant racial abuse from opposing players and spectators. Some teammates even attempt to have him removed from the roster. With his family also affected by the hostility surrounding him, Robinson must navigate the pressures of professional baseball without allowing prejudice to affect his ambitions.
Chadwick Boseman leads the cast as Robinson, with Harrison Ford portraying Rickey. The supporting lineup includes Nicole Beharie as Robinson’s wife, Rachel, Christopher Meloni as Leo Durocher, André Holland as sportswriter Wendell Smith, and Alan Tudyk as Ben Chapman.
The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, 42 holds an 81% critics’ score based on 196 reviews. Meanwhile, its audience score stands at 86 percent. Hollywood Report Card noted, “Solid cinematography, paced well, and propelled with the heart of a truly great, heroic story, this a film about character that seeks to help you define yours. Whether or not they like baseball, everyone in America should see it.”
