Ted Lasso Co-Creator Reveals if Roy Kent Is Leaving After Season 4 Finale

Ted Lasso fans might not need to say goodbye to Roy Kent just yet. Co-creator Brendan Hunt addressed whether Brett Goldstein is leaving the show after his character’s shocking Season 4 finale departure.

Is Roy Kent really leaving Ted Lasso after Season 4?

The Ted Lasso Season 4 finale shook up AFC Richmond’s coaching staff in a major way. Roy Kent stepped down as the men’s team manager after accepting the head coach position at Chelsea. The decision came after Roy learned about Keeley’s pregnancy and sought advice from the Diamond Dogs. Co-creator Brendan Hunt addressed the departure’s implications in a Deadline interview.

Hunt clarified that Brett Goldstein’s exit from the storyline does not necessarily mean he is leaving the show. “No, not necessarily. It is acknowledging that he’s a busy man and giving us some wiggle room I would say,” Hunt told Deadline. He added that there is “no expectation of losing Roy and Keeley.” However, he acknowledged both Goldstein and Juno Temple have packed schedules. Goldstein currently stars in Amazon’s Escorted and Apple TV’s Shrinking alongside his film career.

When asked if both actors might not return as series regulars, Hunt remained noncommittal. “We have no idea. We don’t know if we’re coming back, and when we come back, we don’t know what’s going to be going on in their lives,” he said. He reiterated the importance of flexibility by repeating, “So yeah, the wiggle room.”

In the finale, Roy struggled with the decision before Rebecca gave him her blessing to leave. The episode also saw Alice Chilton promoted to women’s team manager. Ted and Beard both moved into assistant roles under her leadership. Apple TV has not yet officially renewed the series for a fifth season.

Goldstein will likely have a reduced on-screen presence if the show returns. Still, nothing has been confirmed about his involvement in a potential Season 5.
