David Zaslav’s Goodbye Video After WB & Paramount Merger Slammed as ‘Tone Deaf’ By Employees

Outgoing Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav addressed the company’s global workforce in a prerecorded video. The farewell address comes as Paramount Skydance prepares to complete its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Filmed on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, the message focused on the company’s creative work and the people behind its films, television, animation and journalism.

The video drew criticism from employees and creative union workers, who viewed the farewell as disconnected from the problems that marked Zaslav’s tenure. Reporting from The Hollywood Reporter said staff members objected to the lack of discussion about layoffs, restructuring and canceled projects.

Zaslav became CEO following the 2022 WarnerMedia-Discovery merger. During his four-year tenure, the company pursued aggressive cost reductions that resulted in thousands of job cuts and the removal of older titles from streaming services. Some employees reportedly described the message as “tone deaf.”

Zaslav’s farewell sets the stage for Warner Bros. Discovery’s next chapter

The leadership change comes as Paramount Skydance prepares to close its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. According to Variety, a federal judge approved a consent decree last week resolving litigation brought by 12 state attorneys general, clearing a major obstacle to the transaction.

Paramount Skydance is preparing to complete its roughly $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal will bring the companies’ major studio operations under one corporate structure.

David Ellison, Skydance’s leader, will become chairman and CEO of the combined company. Former Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz will serve as co-CEO and oversee the company’s day-to-day operations and integration.

The incoming leadership inherits several immediate challenges. The company must manage its long-term debt, address overlapping cable operations, and determine how its studio operations will be integrated across the Burbank and Melrose campuses.

The transition follows months of regulatory scrutiny over the merger’s potential effects on theatrical distribution and cable markets. For Warner Bros. Discovery employees, the transition brings new leadership after years of restructuring.
