Whalefall Gets New Disney+ Streaming Release Ahead of Austin Abrams Movie’s Debut

Disney+ and Hulu have released an exclusive preview and extended scene from Whalefall. The survival thriller hits theaters on Friday, October 16.

Directed by Brian Duffield, the 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment production stars Austin Abrams alongside Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin.

Duffield directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with author Daniel Kraus, based on Kraus’s 2023 novel.

Abrams plays 17-year-old scuba diver Jay Gardiner, who travels into Monterey Bay to recover the remains of his father, Mitt, played by Brolin. Mitt died by suicide at sea. During a solo dive, Jay is caught near an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and accidentally swallowed. The whale accidentally swallows him.

The cast also includes Elisabeth Shue as Jay’s mother Zara, John Ortiz as family friend Hewey, and Jane Levy and Emily Rudd as Jay’s older sisters, Eva and Nan.

How Whalefall turns an impossible survival story into a high-stakes thriller

Jay gets trapped inside a sperm whale while deep underwater, leaving him with limited time and equipment to escape. He is 154 meters below the surface when he is swallowed. His scuba tank contains enough compressed air for one hour, creating a strict deadline.

Mitt appears through memories as a demanding master diver who taught Jay about deep-sea mechanics and how to respond during dangerous underwater situations. Those lessons become important as Jay tries to survive.

With his oxygen supply falling, he has to use what his father taught him while searching for a way out of the whale. Jay’s survival depends on forcing the whale to breach and regurgitate him back into the ocean.

That goal turns every decision into a race against his remaining air supply. The film therefore combines a physical survival challenge with Jay’s unresolved relationship with his father. His struggle is not only about escaping the whale but also about confronting the lessons and memories his father left behind.

By keeping the danger tied to diving equipment, oxygen, pressure, and the whale’s anatomy, Whalefall approaches its extreme premise as a survival thriller rather than a conventional creature feature.
