Ryan Murphy Blames Critics for Being ‘Wrong’ About This TV Show With Terrible Reviews

Ryan Murphy came out in defense of his popular TV show, All’s Fair. The show received largely negative reviews from critics. Despite that, Hulu has renewed the show for a second season.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Murphy shared his thoughts on the critical response. In the interview, he said, “First of all, I think the critics are wrong. If you look at my career since I started, which was Popular, almost everything that I have made was never embraced critically.”

He said, “I made it for people like me who loved that heightened ’80s soapy procedural thing. The critics called it camp, but camp is a lack of awareness. My work has awareness. The People vs. O.J. was the only time I felt embraced. I don’t rise or fall by [critics’ opinions] anymore.”

When he first started, Murphy revealed that he used to be affected by the critical response to his work. A mentor offered him advice about dealing with critics, saying, “You know what? Just because they put a chalice of delicious poison in front of you doesn’t mean you have to drink it.”

What did critics say about Ryan Murphy’s All’s Fair TV show?

All’s Fair currently sits at a 6% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Scott Bryan of BBC.com wrote, “Not a Must Watch. I would say the acting is bad like GCSE drama bad, but I actually think that’s disrespectful for those who actually do GCSE drama.”

Empire Magazine‘s David Opie wrote, “It takes a special talent to make something so fascinatingly dull, especially with a cast this strong. No words yet invented can fully convey just how much you need to avoid this disastrous show.”

Kayleigh Donaldson of TheWrap wrote, “It’s a cavalcade of wigs and screeching in search of truth, but Murphy seems to have lost the magic touch that made his work so appealing for so long. His snark has rotted into contempt, for audience and art alike.”

Despite poor critical reception, the show has more favorable audience response. The Popcornmeter score currently stands at 65%.

All’s Fair is set to return for its second season in November 2026, with a three-episode premiere.
